Square Stitch Cuff Tutorial

Square Stitch Patchwork Cuff Tutorial

No matter how elaborate beadwork stitches become, or how many holes are added to seed beads, sometimes only simplicity will do. For this week’s project I wanted to do something that was super easy but with a bold look – a project that would be a fun way to play with color but also provide some meditative beadwork.

This square stitch cuff is a great way to practice one of beadweaving’s simplest techniques. Square stitch is very handy if you like the look of loomwork but don’t want to go to all the trouble of setting up a loom and then weaving in your warp threads. Once you've mastered the basics, the pattern possibilities are endless. You can easily create your own unique patterns using graph paper and colored pencils.

To make this cuff you’ll need some size D beading thread of your choice, a clasp or button, and about 30 (total) grams of seed beads in at least 8 colors. I recommend using  round seed beads (preferably of similar make and finish) to get a nice, even bracelet. Have fun choosing your palette. I went with a handful of similar shades in different finishes, but you could also use a chromatic palette with black and white, ROYGBIV +1, or whatever colors you have on hand.

1. Attach a stop bead to a comfortable length of thread, leaving a 12 inch tail. Pick up 4 each of your first 4 seed bead colors (A, B, C, D) and slide them down to the end. Flip the work so that the stop bead is pointing away from you.

Tutorial: Curved Double Chevron Bead Chain

Red Double Chevron Collar

One of my favorite ways to get the look and lightness of netting without a lot of pattern planning is with chevron chain. This versatile stitch can be easily altered with different bead counts to get a variety of beautiful nets, and is a great stitch for collars. In Ancient Worlds Modern Beads, two-hole beads are used to stack two separate chevron chains to get an elegant and slinky collar inspired by Egyptian queens. In this variation, we’re going to combine two chains directly for a perfectly curved collar with oodles of pattern potential.

You can make a double chevron chain with just one color of size 11/o seed beads. Here we’re going to use two colors to highlight the shared beads that will bring two chains together. Once you’ve mastered this stitch, it’s easy to incorporate more colors to the segments for gorgeous bands, stripes, or chevron patterns.

Tutorial On How To Make Bead Spiral Rope

Thank God Is Friday, Few things are prettier than a beaded spiral, and of all the stitches in a beader’s repertoire, spirals are often the most satisfying. Spiral techniques provide us with easy and elegant ropes for necklaces or chunky ropes for bangles, in an endless variety of color and pattern.

Grape Vanilla Russian Spiral Rope

One technique that gets far too little time in the spotlight is bead spiral rope. It is a variation of tubular netting - and therefore tubular peyote stitch. The small compact rows give the stability of a peyote rope, with the flexibility and drape of a crochet one. By combining two bead sizes and small nets, you can create a beautiful rope of spiraling color that works up incredibly fast. bead spiral is a great rope technique for Fireline lovers - the beadwork is very soft, even when using stiff threads.

Tutorial: Bees Heart Honey Bead Necklace

There you are, Welcome back,  It's still the early weeks of September, which means that no matter how many more sunny days we may have to look forward to, it’s officially time to say goodbye to The Rainy Season. With help from the Monochrome Bead Box from Blueberry Cove Beads, I decided to create a pretty necklace with a hint of  Transition from rainy season to the dry season, inspired by bees and honey.

Bees Heart Honey Necklace

This asymmetrical design is super easy to stitch, and you can create it with just about anything that you’ve got in your stash. You’ll need two focal beads of similar shape and size to get the effect – otherwise you can mix and match any seed beads and round beads that you’ve got on hand. I’m using a pair of faux lava rock hearts from the Monochrome Box in black and white; accents of yellow and topaz bring out the summery honey bee vibe. Have fun experimenting with different palettes of your own!

Step By Step Guide On How To Start A Bead Jewelry Business

Hello lovelies....The decision to start a business is a tough one; knowing how to start is tougher. However, with the required skills and the right information, you can be equipped to become a successful entrepreneur.

If you have the needed skills in beaded jewelry making and are interested in either making it a full time job or a part time job to supplement your income from your day job, this article is for you. Here are a few tips you would need to know to kick-start your business from scratch to success:....lets get started shall we...

1. Understand Capital: Start with what you have. Many people shrink from starting their own business because of the wrong assumption that every business needs huge capital to execute. With N25, 000- N50, 000 thats between 150 to 300 US Dollars, you can start a small scale beaded jewellery making business.

2. Decide your scope:
You have to choose the type of jewellery design you want to specialize in, such as earrings, rings, necklaces, handbags or a combination of specialties.

3. Decide how to get your supplies: As a jewellery designer, you have the option of making your pieces from scratch, if you have the tools and the necessary training to do so or you can buy your materials from a supplier. There are many shops within and outside Lagos that sell materials for bead making. Ask around and I am sure you will find one near you....or anywahere you are in the world..winks

Ogalala Netting Bead Tutorial

Ogalala Butterfly Netting
Although some stitches can be occasionally frustrating, we can probably agree that all beading techniques are fun - some are just more fun than others. Take ogalala butterfly weave for example. It’s not as versatile as peyote or herringbone, but it stitches up quickly, and creates a pleasing, twisty ruffle that’s perfect for frilly necklaces and interesting trim.

Ogalala stitch is a variation of netting that is worked from an existing strand or strip of beadwork. The tightly packed stitches create a wonderful ruffle effect with a very organic feel. The basic technique uses beads of the same size, but once you get the hang of it - one try is all you need! - you can experiment with switching up the bead types for different effects.

Spiral Rope Chain

There is something very captivating about a coiling, whirling spiral shape. Perhaps because it is so often a part of nature - right down to our DNA - we are drawn to spirals in our furniture, hairstyles, and jewelry. One of the easiest ways to incorporate spirals into beadwork is with the easy and versatile spiral rope stitch.

I often recommend this technique for new beaders. It’s not a difficult stitch to master, and once the basic concept is understood, the possibilities are endless. It can be done with seed beads of any size. It can be increased, decreased and embellished with ease.

A basic spiral rope is made up of two sections - the core, and the outer spiral rows which wrap around the core. Many how-to’s for spiral rope use an equal number of beads for each. Although the results are pretty, there is usually a fair amount of thread peeking out between the core and the spirals. To make a really polished looking rope, I like to make the outer rows one bead longer than the core.

How to Make a Basic Spiral Rope:

Spiral Rope Tutorial

To make a rope with hidden thread, select two colors of seed beads in the same size. One color will be used for the core, and one for the outside of the spiral. Thread a needle with a comfortable length of beading thread, and pick up 5 core beads, and 5 outer beads.

Slide the beads down until there is a six inch tail. Holding the beads in place on the thread, stitch up through the core beads again, and gently pull the thread snug until the beads form two side-by-side stacks. Hold the beadwork so that the spiral beads are to the left.

Turquoise collar Bead Making

Hello Beaders, I picked out some beads for a nice, easy mini collar. I decided to splurge a bit and use some white-hearts to really keep the inspiration going. I like how the project is looking so far.

Beautiful Bracelets By Hand

There’s something truly wonderful about the form of jewelry we call bracelets. As a project, they’re right in the middle of the road – not as instant as earrings, or as lengthy as necklaces. They can be worn with anything but the longest of sleeves, and are comfortable in almost any weather. No piece of jewelry provides quite as much movement, jangle, poise, or punch to an outfit as a gorgeously made bangle or bracelet.

In her new book, Beautiful Bracelets By Hand, the founder of We Dream in Color has created a treasure trove of inspiring designs. Jade Gedeon’s 75 beautiful bracelets will delight beaders and jewelry makers of all skill levels.

Bullying Bead Making Tutorial....LOL

We all at one point nor the other were bullied, To help prevent these situations from happening, organizations can support the cause of Bullying Awareness, a rare organization here in Nigeria , to support me as i cry out unbehalf of children in our schools and streets plagued with this monster.

My official Bead Color for this Campaign is Pink

The Beads:

This homemade mixture of beads consists of assorted pink acrylics, and a careful selection of seed beads. Most of the mix is made from different shades of pink and red, with a splash or two of white, blue, purple and magenta. The over all affect is a diverse group of beads that come together to make one big, pink collage.

Lights And Tinsel Beads

Soon it would be  December , it's time that all beaders turned to their gift projects and Christmas decorations. I try to make something for many of my friends and family, and most of my beading time is spent designing pieces that will make great gifts. I prefer to give jewelry that is wearable year-round, but sometimes it's nice to have a beautiful and festive Christmas accessory or two.

I recently learnt and  designed a multi-strand bracelet with leaf fringe and different sizes of beads in natural colors.  I decided to create a tree bracelet, complete with white and blue lights.

The Beads:

I wanted continuity with the beads, so I chose to use lined varieties for the foliage as well as the lights, rather than a combination of matte and clear. The palette for my bracelet includes: copper lined green, foil lined blue mix, foil lined clear, and foil lined brown mix. Black will also be used as the base for the 'lights'. Overall, I think that the feel of a crisp and classic Christmas tree can be seen.

Fashion Is What You Make Of It

Fashion magazines and television programs are a great place to find inspiration for jewelry design. Not only are you likely to catch a glimpse of some great designer jewelry, but you'll get the scoop on what colors are up and coming in fashion, what kinds of textures are making it to the runway, and what sort of lengths are in style for necklaces and earrings.

Although I watch fashion programs intently, looking for inspiration, I rarely see anything on the runway that I would want to have in my closet. That is, until I recently saw a feature on the latest line from Rodarte. These interesting and fantastic designs were so unique, I immediately starting musing on how to capture their essence in beadwork.

How To Make Dutch Spiral Rope Bead

Beaded ropes and spiral patterns go together like turquoise and coral, but we always seem to stick with the most obvious stitches. Tubular peyote and twisted herringbone get a lot of time in the spotlight, which means that other really fun techniques often get overlooked. Russian spiral is one neglected stitch that we’ve already covered. Today, we’re going to visit its neighbor, Dutch spiral.

Another variation of peyote stitch, Dutch spiral is worked with three sections, each with a different bead color or type. It’s a lot easier to get started if you’re already comfortable with tubular peyote or flat peyote, and it helps to think of it as peyote with an increase or bridge. Essentially, it increases the number of beads picked up during the final stitch, to create a loose section of beads. Because tubular peyote has a natural spiral shape, this extra section curves around the beadwork.
